Your task is to independently complete the assigned reading and submit written assignments at the start of class on Fridays. Please complete each part thoroughly and in an organized manner. Complete sentences and proper use of language required.
1. VOCABULARY - Choose five new words from your reading.
For each of the vocabulary words:
- write the word
- write the complete sentence from the novel (quotes and page reference)
- write what you think the word means based on context clues
- write the dictionary definition of the word
2. SUMMARY - Write summary statements about what you read this week.
Be concise and only tell what is important.
3. DOUBLE ENTRY JOURNALS-A double entry journal is a way to closely read passages from text to discover what individual words and sentences reveal about characters, conflicts, themes, etc…
- use the left side of the double column to copy a significant quote or line from the story with its page number. Use the second column to react to that line, interpret it, or ask questions about the text
- four entries for each week
- a quotation can be narration or dialogue-you are not limited to just what the characters say
- find passages that you think help us better understand the author’s subject matter, characterizations, attitude, and especially themes (messages or big ideas). If you find yourself repeating what the quote says, you might want to select a different quote or reevaluate how you are approaching the response. (You already did a summary!)
